My Son Sanctuary - near Hoi An

My Son sanctuary

My Son sanctuary is an illustration of the Champa Kingdom, an important phase in the political and cultural history of South-East Asia. The sanctuary is Vietnam’s most significant archeological site and it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Shrouded in the jungle, the journey out to My Son is an attraction in itself. The sanctuary is in a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains. Its location had strategic as well as religious significance as it was an easily defensible stronghold.

The majority of it was built in the 10th century and while many have been pillaged or destroyed by war, others have remained in good condition. My Son sanctuary is divided into 10 main groups depending on the era or divinity honoured.

The predominant style of the architecture sculptures in the My Son Sanctuary is derived directly from India such as Shiva deities adorning the temple towers. There is however influenced of North Vietnam, most significantly the boat shaped roof visible on at least one building.
